Star Trek Reviewed... sort of.

Ok we went to see Star Trek for Mothers Day. Yes, she wanted to go. The improved sets and young, sexier versions of old characters may have played a small part in that decision as well. This action packed, sci-fi extravaganza, should entice a new fan base and possible skate through some potential harm from the old fan boys( now about 40 years or so of age). Spoiler alert!
The story touches on the origins of the beloved crew of the enterprise, at least a parrallel version of their characters. Do to an astronomical natural then unatural phenomenon, the course of time changes, which in turn changes the whole known history of our famous characters.
A sun of the Romulan solar system goes super nova, which will destroy the Romulan planet. Our beloved Spock devices a way to save the planet by creating a situation that will cause the sun to create a singularity. (black hole) in turn preventing the destruction of the planet. (but wouldn’t the planet get ripped apart from the black hole?). Don’t ask they don’t answer that. Spock ends up bring to late and a Romulan surviver ( thanks to some outer space blue collar work) blames Spock for everything. The former Hulk, Eric Bana plays our mad bad guy. And he swears revenge and during his hunt both Spock (now old and wise) runs into the black hole to avoid getting killed. He and the pursuing menace travel back in time to undue and take revenge on the Federation. This action changes the universe we know and loved and makes a new time line starting from the birth of Captian James T Kirk. This set up allows for a whole new series of Star Trek movies that won’t interfere with Gene Roddenberry’s work. Since he is not around, they can refer to his work but not have to follow the books, the shows, the comics, nor video games. And perhaps not even be so geeky.
You will enjoy this movie, it modernizes the Trekkie-verse. Go watch it and have fun. PS. Wynonna Ryder plays Spocks Mom and manages not to steal his ears.

Beowulf Trailer. Full 3D animation Angelina can live forever.

So this film may bring you back to the days of reading a book. Remember those? Oh of course you do you probably own the new Harry Potter book.
Well this is a new film based on an old story. Robert Zemeckis tells the tale of Beowulf in a 3D animated extravaganza, and if you don't believe me, well can you imagine seeing Angelina Jolie in the nude in 3D (with well covered hot spots in gold)? Jolie performs as Grendel's Mother.

Harry Potter and who ordered a Phoenix?

photo_60
Harry Potter 5 (the shorter name) had set some high expectations. Harry is older, he can do more magic, it should be a spectacular to talk about through the ages. Now to be fair, I have not read the book, so I will not compare and contrast like some other reviewers might. I simply want a good story and some good acting with some great visual effects for this cool evening.

I first must recommend for anyone seeing this movie that they watch at least Harry Potter 4, which this movie references almost the whole movie, and anyone that has not seen it will probably be lost. The whole Harry crew have come of age, their teen years are showing and Harry is slowly not gonna be able to pull off a young character, with one book left to go I am sure production for the last movie has already begun even though everything about the ending of the Harry adventures is kept in a dark secret till the book is released.

The story begins near Harry's home where he is in a playground and he is getting picked on by his cousin. Harry pulls out his wand, and the expectations begin. Harry illegally uses magic in front of a human (his Mogul cousin) in order to defend him from "dementors" who are basically soul eaters. He gets expelled from school due to the use of his magic, then in order to undo the expelling, Harry must undergo a hearing.

In what seems like a minor play of politics ( ala Bush not listening that the war is failing), the Ministry of Wizards ignores warnings of the return of "He who must not be named". Well as this review may hint to, the movie gets a little drawn out. Simply put, the Ministry gets control of Hogwart's (the wizard school), and in order to control information, they must create conspiracy theories, to make Harry and Dumblebore look bad. The school undergoes dictator like changes, rights taken away, and the students are now under strict rule where magic can not be used. All the while the secret Order of the Phoenix is gathering to prepare and plan against the pending doom that "He" will bring.

The story gets fairly intricate as Harry who is feeling isolated, and alone is also going to what most teens go through as being misunderstood. Harry forms a small army of students "Dumbeldoor's Army" in order for the kids to be prepared in case "He", and his armies come a knocking. Harry is voted to train the kids secretly since they can't practice the magic the are supposed to be learning.

Mix this with a fairly underdeveloped love story and you have a little bit of a mess. The main characters have one thing going for them... if you have seen the other
photo_76
movies, they pretty much have their own characters down patt.
New characters are fairly underdeveloped and by now I expected more visual effect craze to take over and have an all out war of magic. Outside of some magical practical jokes and some practice magic, you had to wait till nearly the end of the film to see a small, but awesome display of a witch fight. The end of the movie felt fairly anti-climactic.

The movies or books seem fairly repetitious. We are supposed to feel sorry for Harry, he is growing, he still misses his parents and we still don't know why after so many opportunities "He " still doesn't kill Harry? Although the movie hints at Nevill's importance it is implied that "He" may be chasing the wrong wizard (Harry) and it may be our innocent low esteem Neville that is the big gun wizard? Only the last book will tell.

So the ending was like the others, there was no real ending, no real closure, but that is the point, more books, more movies, more sales.

Now before I completely leave you with, "man I should stay home than see this movie?", remember, there are two types of viewers for this movie, The Fan and the parent. (Ok there are more than that, but I am focusing on these two). The fan is going to see it anyway, you have to complete the story.
The parent may wanna stay home, but I saw this movie with my daughter (a fan), and just to see the face of awe of this movie and their utter joy, this movie turns into a must see. So sit back let the Potter world take you away for a couple of hours and feel the joy that Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and David Yates give them.

What is Code name "Cloverfield" now called 1-18-08

There is a trailer that shows before the "Transformers" movie that has a sick buzz. It starts off with a going away party in New York City, and ends with the head of the Statue of Liberty's head being blown half way across the city landing in a city street. From what I gather it is code named Cloverfield and is being produced by J.J. Abrams who also produced Mission Impossible III and the latest to be released Star Trek movie. We will try to look up more info into this movie and bring it to you.

We have a versions for you. This is the official Trailer

Update
Sound like the movie is a big monster movie ala King King and Godzilla. The monster is called for now "Parasite". And what makes this different than any other giant monster movie? Well, as I understand it, most of the film is going to be shot using home video cameras, as if from the point of view of real people who are experiencing an attack on New York. It’s designed as a fairly small picture, all things considered, and right now, they’re working to make sure the script is going to deliver some wild thrills (like an earthquake that levels Manhattan or an oil tanker flipping over by the Statue of Liberty), but that it’s not suddenly going to turn into a giant $150 million movie.
This can make for an real interesting movie ala Blair Witch Project. Keep your eyes open for this one guys.
Update:
Looks like there is some movement. The website promoting the date of the movie's launch, http://www.1-18-08.com/

Ratatouille: The Lounge Review

ratatouille_sm_02
Ratatouille is another great film by Pixar, as they have taken unlikely unlovable characters and make you care for them and wanting a rat cook for yourself. On the technical end, the visuals were simply stunning, set in Paris, you get amazing panoramics of this amazing romantic city, the environments are natural and real even with its slight delicate cartoonish styling. Artistically it is a solid blend of cartoonish animated characters and realistic environments, movements and atmospheres that convince. Ok, Ok what about the story.

Remy (the greyish rat above) is a rat with a sensitive sense of smell and can pick out the ingredients of almost any type of food. This seems to allow him to appreciate the finer things in food. His love for food has him sneaking into a home to watch his favorite cook on the TV. In doing so he learns culinary skills and teaches himself to read cookbooks to master this art. Eventually he finds that his favorite cook Auguste Gusteau has passed and while in shock the homeowner awakes to find rats in her home. This leads into an adventure that leads Remy in the heart of the kitchen at the famous Gusteau restaurant where he gets caught and eventually gets befriended by a garbage boy named Linguini.

Linguini gets caught after he catches Remy by the head cook who suspects Linguini of tampering with a soup, that eventually enters the taste buds of a famous critic who ends up writing a rave review. Turns out it was Remy who concocted the ingredients. This relationship turns into an admirable story line of acceptance, fine foods, and love.

It is a great family movie, with great acting, visuals and some heart warming moments. I do recommend this move to anyone who has begun a collection of Pixar... now Pixar Disney films.

Transformers: The Lounge review

ImageRenderingHandler.ashx
The highly anticipated live action movie "Transformers" directed by Michael Bay has been released; in this live-action version of the popular cartoon series and Hasbro toy line, we find the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons landing on planet Earth and fighting for Energon called "The Cube", their most valued power source.

First I must confess, as a child I was a fan. Loved the toys, cartoons.etc... so I will try to be too biased. The short version is, it was fun. but on to the nitty gritty. Full of some amazing 3D animation that if attempted 3 years ago, it could not be done, the movie does give plenty of eye candy that after the first few "transformations" eventually have you looking at your watch saying "is he done yet". At times you catch yourself realizing that it takes them a bit of time to change from vehicle form to robot form, so it makes you wonder: how they don't get killed before they are done changing?

The story is as old as time, Good Versus Evil, power hunger and the fight for what is right. The main characters are Shia LaBeouf (Sam) and eye candy Megan Fox (Mikaela) play 11th grade teens (which in itself is unrealistic) who initially present themselves as a typical shallow youths, in a superficial world. To give some credit Shia does a great job keeping a straight face even when things are silly and quirky. Unfortunately the acting is poor and the script is unrealistic for them to be each others love interest. I will say that I enjoyed some of the silly antics of Sam's parents. I kept having to remind myself that the movie is a translation of a cartoon, I had to be more forgiving.

Over time I just allowed myself to enjoy the consistent action sequences which, if you sit too close to the theater screen ends up being mostly fast, quick camera movement and blurs which leave most of the action open to the imagination. With battles in Qatar, led by Capt. Lennox (Josh Dubamel) and Tech Sgt. Epps (Tyrese Gibson) after they survive a massive attack by a transforming helicopter; these scenes felt like a separate movie, which I enjoyed more and wished these guys were the main characters. (more forgiving...be more forgiving).

In Washington, another set of characters are trying to decode the language of the Decepticons as they have been tapping into the secure network with all of Washingtons Top Secrets. Computer Analyst Maggie Madsen (the Beautiful Rachel Taylor) is a smart young (to young?) woman who works for Secretary of Defense played by Jon Voight, which barely interact with the main characters, made me feel like this was a TV series as opposed to Michael Bay/ Steven Speilberg film.

So to top it off as a fun film the film works, its cheezy, typical Bay film making that is what a night of fun at the movies is about. It is not trying to make a political statement (war in Iraq), its not talking about global warming, nor oil gas prices (GM is desperate for sales for their gas eating cars such as
Ratchet (a Hummer H2) and Ironhide (a TopKick pickup truck) and its not trying to get you into Burger King and Mountain Dew . It is just a non serious, yet dry joke, action film for the family to enjoy, and for fans to stare at visual graphics and imagination. It is not filled with gore, and anyone who gets hurt never gets seen.

Go see it and if we had a star rating which we don't I would give it 2 Stars, or a B or a thumb neither going up nor down.
